I was thinking about starting a 529 plan for my son, who is currently 6 years old. But I was wondering if right now is the best time to invest, considering the current economic situation. Should I wait until the markets are more stable? I don’t know very much about investing, and I don’t wanna invest college money for him just to lose it! Any advice? Thanks!!
For $500,000 it’s around $194 a month. Is this too much?

Ameriprise Financial is sellign me 400k life insurance policy that costs 200 per month. They say its like a savings plan because I can access 90% of the 200 per month at any time. Is this a good idea or a scam??
I am 18 years old, and realized that I will be in some major debt when I graduate from my prospective college. I guess I let me desire to attend the school outweigh the costs, which is about 49,000 dollars a year, with about 19,000 of that total I will have to pay in student loans a year. Can someone give me some advice about saving money? I thought about investing but how can I when I have no money to hire a broker…I mean I heard of investing in good mutual funds to earn money for retirement purposes, but is there something else I can do!?
My corp. has gone private so I’m no longer able to get stock. Sould I increase my pre-tax 401K contributions ( currently I ‘m only contributing up tp the company match) or should I take the extra money (post tax) and open a Roth IRA?
Any other advice would be appreciated.
Thanks…Rob
Should’ve given more info. My 401k is diversified and since the company did a stock buy back… I ‘m trying to determine what to do with the portion of my income that used to go toward co. stock. I’m 44, my income so far this year will be arround 140K. Considering that I’m in the highest tax bracket does that make a Roth less desirable?
I would like to open a college account, with applicable tax benefits, if possible, through an online bank to put $ in a MMA or CDs (this is to supplement our 529 for our oldest child). Where is a good online bank to do so?
A generous 401(k) match and low-cost investment options will help your savings grow faster.
